Separate MMR Vaccinations

Mumps Vaccine Update - 11 March 2008

As the recent problem with our supply from Merck now seems to be resolved, we are once again taking bookings for all vaccinations including mumps-only and mumps-only boosters. Please note that whilst we do not anticipate there being any further issues, any delay in the continued supply of our mumps vaccines would result in new bookings being postponed for a short time.

Thank you for having been patient in this matter.

Please refer to our FAQs (above) for answers to your questions

For your information the vaccinations are performed at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in St Johns Wood, London, UK.

For directions please look here and come to outpatients by the front entrance.

The vaccinations are given separately with MINIMUM 6 weeks in-between shots.

However, if you want to make it longer in between, then that is fine by us.

If you are purchasing a complete vaccine package, the order of the vaccines is:

1. Measles
2. Rubella
3. Mumps

Please use the menu above to navigate our MMR information and Booking system.

Single measles immunisation

The Vaccine
The Rouvax measles vaccine is produced by Sanofi Pasteur MSD in France. This vaccine does contain egg products. If your child has an egg allergy of any sort, please call us on 0207 078 3828 prior to booking to discuss.

Strain
We use the Schwartz strain of Rouvax.

Effectiveness
The vaccine provides effective immunity in over 95% of children immunised.

Vaccination age
The vaccination can be given at any time from 14 months.

Side effects

  • There is occasionally some pain and swelling at the injection site

Your child has a 1 in 30 chance of developing symptoms of a mild measles attack, usually occurring after about 7 days and lasting for 2-3 days. Typical symptoms include a high temperature, runny nose, sticky eyes and possibly a rash and/or vomiting. Treat this as you would any 'flu like illness.

There is a 1 in 1,000 chance of a febrile convulsion, that is a fit as a result of a high fever. To minimise the risk of this happening, treat any high temperature with paracetamol.

  • There is a 1 in 20,000 chance of your child temporarily developing idiopathic thrombocytopaenia purpura (ITP). This is a clotting disorder of the blood, that will cause a bruise-like rash. It usually goes away on its own and is rarely serious.

To the best of our knowledge, all side-effects of the single measles vaccine occur at least as commonly with the MMR vaccine.

Please note that if supply problems occur we may obtain supplies of different vaccines than the ones listed. We will only offer you alternative vaccines if we are completely confident of their safety and efficacy.

Single rubella immunisation

The Vaccine
The Rudivax rubella vaccine is produced by Sanofi Pasteur MSD in France.

Strain
Wistar RA 27/3 strain

Effectiveness
The vaccine provides effective immunity in over 95% of children immunised

Vaccination age
The vaccination can be given at any time from 12 months. However, maximum effectiveness may not be reached before 15 months of age

Side effects
A few children will have the symptoms of a mild attack of rubella, for example a fever and rash, a few days after immunisation. Rarely a temporary arthralgia (painful joints) can occur that is occasionally temporarily disabling, but this is more likely in older children or adults. Please note that if supply problems occur we may obtain supplies of different vaccines than the ones listed. We will only offer you alternative vaccines if we are completely confident of their safety and efficacy.

Single mumps immunisation

The Vaccine
The 'Mumpsvax' mumps is produced by Merck (USA)

Strain
Jeryl Lynn strain

Effectiveness
The vaccine provides effective immunity in over 90% of children immunised

Vaccination age
The vaccination can be given at any time from 12 months. However, maximum effectiveness may not be reached before 15 months of age

Side effects
These are uncommon, but can include pain and swelling at the injection site; rarely swelling of the parotid glands under the ears (in about 1% of immunisations); extremely rarely a mild meningitis can occur. Please note that if supply problems occur you will have to wait for the mumps vaccine to arrive. We will only use Jeryl Lynn strain as it is the safest. There are alternate vaccine strains e.g. Urabe, however we do not deem these safe nor effective enough.
